• Ajanta Caves are an important part of India’s rich ancient cultural heritage.

• Location:

Ajanta Caves are located in the Indian state of Maharashtra, at a distance of about 100 to 110 km from the city of Aurangabad, which lies in the central part of India. These caves are carved into the hard black basalt, an igneous rock, on the hillside along the bank of the Waghur River.

Travel Route to Ajanta Caves:

Aurangabad (Sambhajinagar) city is well connected to other cities and regions of India by roadways, railways, and air transport.

Ajanta Caves are situated about 100 to 110 km away from Aurangabad city. There is a parking facility at some distance from the caves. From there, visitors can reach the main caves by government-operated buses.

Information about Ajanta Caves:

Ajanta Caves are carved into the hillside along the Waghur River in the shape of a horseshoe. The entire hill consists of hard blackish basalt rock, which is an igneous rock.

The caves are located at an approximate height of 15 to 30 meters (40 to 100 feet) above the riverbed. A pathway has been constructed to reach this place. Along the way, small shops can be seen selling statues with various sculptural designs.

There are a total of 29 Buddhist caves at this site, although some of them are incomplete.

• First Buddhist Cave:

While proceeding along the pathway leading to the caves, we first reach the first cave. This cave has twenty pillars with fine and elegant craftsmanship. Beautiful paintings are drawn on the inner walls. Delicate carvings can be seen on the upper portions of the pillars. Inside, a beautiful statue of Tathagata Gautama Buddha is seen.

2) Upon entering Cave Number Two, one can see delicate artwork on the ceiling and walls. Many wall paintings based on events from the life of Gautama Buddha are depicted here. The colors of these murals still appear fresh and vivid. A beautiful Buddha sculpture at the center attracts the mind. On one side of this cave, sculptural figures of Panchika and Harati can be seen. Fine and intricate carvings are also visible on the pillars here.

• The caves in the third section are in an incomplete state.

• Cave Number Four has a large and spacious hall. There are a total of twenty-eight pillars here. Sculptures of doorkeepers can be seen on the outer side. At the place of worship, there is a statue of Mahatma Gautama Buddha. In this way, a total of six Buddha statues can be seen here. Observing the facial expressions of these statues, it appears that this cave represents the Ashta Bhaya Nivaraka (removal of eight fears). This cave is of a vast and grand form.

• Cave Number Six is a two-storied cave. The Buddha statue here is seen seated in Padmasana posture. There are pillars on the second floor. Carvings of crocodiles and floral designs can be seen on the pillars of the assembly hall and at other places. On the second floor, statues of Gautama Buddha in various postures are visible. Decorative carvings are also seen on the doorway of this cave.

• There is not much worth seeing in Cave Number Eight.

• Cave Number Nine is a chaitya hall of rectangular shape. In the center there is a stupa, and on the side pillars, faint Buddha figures carved in various expressions can be seen.

• Cave Number Ten is a Hinayana Buddhist cave. This cave has forty pillars and a chaitya hall at the center. The carvings here are extremely attractive.

• Cave Number Eleven is a large assembly hall with a Buddha statue placed at the shrine.

• Cave Number Sixteen is extremely special and significant. It contains paintings of the Buddha. Various episodes and events from the life of the Buddha are depicted here in paintings.

• In Cave Number Seventeen, beautiful wall paintings can be seen. These depict Buddha Jataka tales, which convey invaluable philosophical messages about life. A Buddha statue is seen at the center.

• Cave number 19 is a temple carved in the shape of a stream (nala).

• A Buddha statue can be seen inside this cave.

• Different styles from various periods can be observed in the Ajanta Caves.

• These caves were excavated in two phases.
